Hi there, this is letters from Marn, a weekly update on my journey in making art while trying to be a person. See my work at noisybeak.com .
A week 7 days as it always has been, but different every week. This week started foggy coupled with a brewing ear infection, before it was treated, my tummy caught up in the mayhem, followed my my index finger with the help of a long darning needle.
Everyday is a good day, we do what we can. Healing, I’ve realised, is uncomfortable. That very discomfort which I could not bear, which I ran away from, makes room for repair. Like scabbing skin, itchy, but you can’t scratch, so not to disturb new growth.
Lying down most of the time, I travelled in my mind with…
Reads
The Animals In that Country by Laura Jean McKay
I scanned the blurb, picked up ‘talking animals’, and I started reading. It started off with foreshadowing like many other dystopian fiction, but quickly evolved into mangled grammar and words that make no immediate sense. I enjoyed reading from start to end, immersing in the author’s imagined world of how it would be, how it would feel, and how we might eventually become if we could talk to animals.
Turn Right at Machu Picchu by Mark Adams
An adventure magazine writer, —reads: not an adventurer—walks in the trails of Hiram Bingham in 1910s(?). I cringed through Bingham’s bigoted account of the discovery, while I enjoyed the author’s self mockery, and most of all learning about the geographical, historical and spiritual importance of Machu Picchu. Armchair adventure, like real adventure, joy comes with pain.

James Wine’s built ecology as nature’s revenge
A house is built into a forest instead of planting trees around a house.
Earth day interview
For earth day, Fancy tiger crafts asked me some questions about my sustainability practice, and here is the interview on their website.
Beakies
Going into my 3rd and 4th bear. Progress slowed.
The last 2 bears were created from a direct reaction to videos I see online.
With the next 2, I’m questioning my feelings towards teddy bears as an icon. One I’m not familiar with.
My left hand picks up the green bear, it is small dense and heavy.
My right hand picks up the brown bear, it is big but soft and light.
I drew bears, bears and bears. Mr Lunarian’s tai-chi practice has influenced my choice of their postures.
Still going no where. I started reading Bear: myth, animal, icon by Wolf D Storl, in which he explores the relationship between humans and bears from multiple points of view.
Bears as the guardian spirit that they are, must appear to me how they would want to be represented. I started stitching.
I’m going back to hearing the bears tell me how they want to look as a beakie. Thanks for being here. See ya next week, marn.
Mighty girls are in the shop. Check them out, adopt them, tell a friend.
